TxtLJ You can use LiveJournal's TxtLJ service to receive text notifications and make posts to your journal with your mobile phone. Give us some feedback on the experience at feedback. What would make TxtLJ more useful? How can we improve the service for you guys?
LJ Dashboard We've cooked up a new utility at LJ Labs, where we're developing a whole host of LJ side projects.
Introducing LJ Dashboard, a portal to the most popular communities, journals and entries on LiveJournal. Now there's a mechanism to help you discover new content and keep track of what's happening out there. Login to the Dashboard using your Open ID, which is exampleusername.livejournal.com. After you're asked to grant identity validation to dashboard.livejournal.com, you'll be all set to poke around and play with some of the things we've come up with.
Since we're launching LJ Dashboard for the first time, we encourage you to post some feedback at lj_labs.
We're currently running some house ads on the Dashboard. Soon ads for external businesses will replace them. But right now all users see them because, for the time being, we don't have a way of distinguishing between paid and unpaid users on the Dashboard. Have no fear: soon as we've got that worked out, paid users will be spared. Thanks for your patience!
We're having a lot of fun with some great ideas right now so keep an eye out for new LJ Labs releases! |

| Paris/Berlin Trip, March-April 2008 |
[May. 22nd, 2008|11:23 am] |
Here I am, finally at the last 2 days.
Saturday, April 12: Kathe Kollwitz Museum, East Side Gallery, Kreuzberg, and KaDeWe
We began our day early with a trip to the Kathe Kollwitz Museum just a few blocks from our pension. I failed to check the hours, however, and assumed they opened up around 9 or 10. But alas, we were early, and the doors were closed, so we wandered around the grounds for a while. It was all charming and idyllic in that messy-yet-tidy Germanic way. Their gardening traditions come out of English cottage garden tradition, not French, which means ordered chaos rather than formalism. Recently I was reading one of my big garden books and learned that the New European style of garden design associated mainly with the Netherlands, began as an idea in Germany. The idea is to utilize large naturalistic plantings that are more suited to the local environment and require less upkeep. (See http://www.oudolf.com ) Anyway, I could see a lot of this in the surrounding garden and in much of Berlin. Big drifts of ivy left to take over the space under trees, along walls, etc. It was really lovely.

Sunday, April 13: How we missed our plane
I've briefly explained this story to a few people in RL, but here it is again.
We had gotten pretty used to the U/S-Bahn schedules in Berlin and expected generally a 3-5 minute wait for any train. Otherwise, they are pretty fast and easy to use, so we figured that giving ourselves an hour and a half from pension to Tegel airport would be sufficient. What we never realized or took into account was that the trains run on a different schedule on Sundays, with anywhere from 10-20 minutes depending on the stop. When we saw the times on the first stop, we got worried. When we saw the times at the second, we desperately hoped we would make it. By the time we got to the bus to the airport, we weren't sure what would happen.( Read more... )
It's already 2pm now (yikes!) and I need to wrap this up. I might post general thoughts later, but for now I'll say the experience was a good one, despite a few pratfalls along the way. We really got homesick towards the end, missed our family, our friends, our house, our city, and just wanted to get home as quickly as possible. Nevertheless, I loved Europe and would probably go back again, albeit some places I haven't been.
If you've missed anything, you can step back through our vacation here: http://saintartaud.livejournal.com/tag/europe+vacation I've also tagged the cities individually: http://saintartaud.livejournal.com/tag/paris http://saintartaud.livejournal.com/tag/berlin

Does anyone know what it is called when a group of plan to get together, but they make it seem random and they just do something suddenly freeze or start dancing, or have a pillow fight. It is like street theater. Does anyone know what this is called or who does it? |

| More Bullets Than A John Woo Film... |
[May. 22nd, 2008|01:00 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | busy | ] | - Half of my team is out of the office today. *yawn*
- I'm SO behind on getting things together for Balticon AND for Wizard World next week. I'm getting to the point of having to say "Well, if it gets done, it gets done." I don't like saying that. I'd rather say "It's done."
- The current oil crunch is NOT due to (A) The Saudis, (B) Big Oil, (C) The Current Administration, or (D) The Secret Worldwide Conspiracy (although everyone except for (D) has had their own little part to play, don't get me wrong). The current oil crunch is due to the fact that THERE IS NOT ENOUGH OIL TO MEET DEMAND. And, IMNSHO, there probably never will be again. Better get used to those high prices... they aren't going to go anywhere.
Having said that, BOY, do I hope I'm wrong. Because I've never really enjoyed reading about dystopian futures, and I certainly don't think I want to live in one.
- Boy, do I need this upcoming vacation to Baltimore.
So, how are you? |

"What are your politics, son?" "Social conservative, fiscally liberal"
Dennis on 30 Rock is ever internet nerd's political opposite.
The bottom line is, if you're fiscally conservative, you're socially conservative. Its such a strange thing, to me, that people can get a "pass" on being for gay marriage, or drug decriminalization when they're also all about gutting any hints of public infrastructure. Its kind of disgusting.
So, fuck you, internet. |

| Washing of the Water |
[May. 22nd, 2008|09:36 am] |
Thursday, and a long weekend looming. Much of said weekend will be spent in final preparation for Diecon. I haven't had the chance to playtest the games, but I think they'll play out alright. I'm going to take along a hardcopy of Earthbound, for backup.
Have been put in charge of a small initiative at work. I look forward to the challenge, and to making this work out.
Also work-related - new co-worker, and it's someone known to me. She produces and hosts a couple of quite terrific shows for our local NPR station, and her voice and musical selections were companions on the drive to and from Berea when Erin and I were together. Anne's quite cool. |

| | ROTFLMAO | ] | I'm not a big fan of American Idol, although there have been some good singers to come out of it.
But this... THIS... is pure comedy gold!
Ladies & Gentlemen...
GLADYS KNIGHT AND HER (NEW) PIPS!
And, yes, those guys are EXACTLY who you think they are!
And look closely at Ms. Knight (a classy lady if ever there was one), and the two pips on the ends, trying to keep it together while the third guy... pips like no one has ever pipped before! *grin* |
